In this post, I want to further explain the notion of “our reality” vs. “objective reality.”

The notion that we live in an objective world which is independent of our thoughts and beliefs is really inaccurate.

Psychologists have been saying for a long time that our thoughts and beliefs act as a filter through which we perceive the world.

If our thoughts and beliefs act as a filter that we perceive the world through, then we are not objectively perceiving the world - we are subjectively perceiving our interpretation of the world. And the reason why I use the word “interpretation” is because, as psychologists have noted, our beliefs and thoughts affect the way that we perceive the world.

A simple and overused example would be that of a pessimistic person vs. an optimistic person. Both people might experience the same events, yet one interprets the event as positive and the other as negative. The event was objectively the event, regardless of perception. But perception is how we define and remember it in our mind, and that perception is dependent on our beliefs and thoughts.

This is what I mean by “creating our reality.” Reality itself is objective, but the very act of us interpreting and trying to attribute value (i.e. make judgments about it) is a process that is not independent of our perceptions of it. Therefore, what we experience in our life is our notion of reality vs. the objective truth of what “reality really is” in the objective universe.

If you understand and believe in this concept, then you will begin to understand why I bother to write about the types of topics that I write about. I write about these topics because, along with objective reality, we are co-creators of “our reality.” So an equation could be: Our perceptions + Objective reality = Our reality.

The conclusion to be drawn from this logic is that all of us do not live in the same “reality”. Instead, we all live in our own versions of reality. Your reality is probably much different than mine, which is different from my neighbor’s, my friend’s, etc.

If you accept this notion, then you understand what a tremendous opportunity we all have in front of us every day. If we control “our reality” to a large degree, then that means that we can have a profound impact on our life simply by changing the way that we view things.

If you get really enamored with this idea, then you might become attracted to the idea of trying to optimize your thoughts and beliefs by becoming a coach or writer like I have. The reason that I write about these topics is really three-pronged.

First of all, I have seen the results of implementing these concepts into my own life and I know that they work. This isn’t even a belief that I have that personal development works, it is a knowing. And that knowing comes from repeated personal successes that were a direct result of embracing my responsibility as a co-creator of my reality.

Another reason that I write about this material is because I am really interested in helping people any way that I can. If I can have a business that not only generates income but also supports and helps people, then that is really the best of both worlds for me. That resonates deeply with my own personal integrity.

The last reason why I write about these topics is because I truly believe that learning to effectively create your reality is easily one of the most important things that anyone can ever do in their life. Think about it. You create your own reality every second of your life. Every thought, every perception that you have is an opportunity for you to create the reality that you want for yourself.

This is an enormous opportunity! Do you know any other opportunity that has a scope that large and that will drastically change your life in every possible aspect (emotionally, spiritually, economically, etc.) ? Most information is written in very specific terms and only applicable to certain areas such as “wealth building” or “emotional intelligence.”

On the other hand, this information is completely generic and applies to everything that you do (or could imagine) in your life. If you learn how to more effectively create your reality, then you will have increases in your wealth and emotional intelligence (along with many other things) simply because you are thinking more effectively and perceiving reality more optimally.

What could possibly be more important than learning how to co-create the best type of reality that we possibly could?
