Useless rules and restrictions

I had to laugh when I was listening to Wayne Dyer talk about how he doesn’t know or care about the proper usage of grammar, it means nothing to him. He simply speaks from his heart and that is all he cares about.

And that message resonated deeply with me. That is a perfect example of following your intuition. If using proper grammar gets in the way of you speaking from your heart, then don’t use proper grammar.

At what cost do we attempt to follow rules that aren’t even that useful? When I began writing articles for this website, I became painfully aware of my need for a competent editor for these blog posts. Why? Because I don’t have a solid grasp of grammar nor do I have much interest in learning at this point. I could care less about grammatical rules. It just literally doesn’t matter to me whether or not I am speaking in a way that others consider “grammatically correct.” Is my message coherent? Does it inspire people? If it is both of those things, then that is all that I care about.

The truth is, if I were to become a stickler for grammar then that would be at the cost of completely speaking from my heart; I would have to juggle the way that I naturally write in an attempt to follow rules that aren’t even that important to me.

Furthermore, my intentions for this website are to deeply relate with and facilitate shifts in my audience. Those are my intentions. Anything that detracts or distracts me from that intention isn’t worth investing my time or energy into (there I just ended a sentence on a preposition…so let the 3rd grade teachers scold me! :) ).

But ask yourself, what parts of your life are you compromising to follow rules that are at best, marginally useful and at worst completely meaningless?

What determines when I place a hyphen between words? For “non-grammatical” I use a hyphen. But for “at worst” I don’t. Hell if I know, it just feels right :) .
